Swine flu

Just eew. >.<

What is swine influenza?

It is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. It regularly causes high flu outbreaks in pigs but with low death rates. There are four main sub-types of the virus, but the most recent isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

How does it spread?

Swine flu viruses do not typically infect humans though they do occur through close proximity or contact with infected pigs or contaminated areas. Cases of human-to-human spread have been documented.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu:
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Runny nose (aku dah ah selalu resdung, chuak woo)
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Lack of appetite (sib baik ni tak pernah lagi) :P
- Vomiting and diarrhoea in some cases.

Has this strain of flu been seen before?

No. Flu mutates constantly, so it is common for new strains to emerge. Pigs can also be infected with both human and avian influenza, and the current circulating swine flu strain appears to contain genetic elements from all three.

Can swine flu be treated with antiviral drugs and flu vaccine?

The swine flu is resistant to two common drugs – Amantadine and Rimantadine. The H1N1 swine flu viruses are very different from human H1N1 viruses. Therefore, vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection. However, a “seed vaccine” has been specifically tailored to this swine flu and will be manufactured if officials deem it necessary.

Can people catch swine flu by eating pork?

No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 70ÂșC and above kills the swine flu virus.

How long is someone with swine flu considered contagious?

People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic; possibly for up to seven days following the onset of the illness. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

What can I do to protect myself from the swine flu?

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against the swine flu.

However, you can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza by:

- Covering your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or handkerchief when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the waste basket after you use it.

- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also helpful

- Try to avoid close contact with sick people. - If you get sick with influenza, stay at home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

- Consult your nearest healthcare facility if you think you have any of the symptoms.

Which countries have had cases of the swine flu?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed human cases of swine flu in Mexico, the United States, Canada and Spain. Only Mexico has reported deaths from the new strain.

This or that? Make up your mind!

"So, who can tell me the features of a normal thyroid gland?" asked the professor.

Aku pelik. Gambar kat depan tunjuk slide prostate, asal dia dok tanye thyroid pulak. Fine lah, bagi chance. Jawab lah kami apa itu thyroid.

"The thyroid consists of follicles," answered one of us. Prof buat muka. Sudah.

"No! The prostate has no follicles! The thyroid has follicles, not the prostate!" the prof explained. Kami tergelak. Bukan aku lah, aku pandai control bila nak tergelak. Fine, aku tersengih. Bad move guys, korunk dah buat prof naik angin. But who are we to be blamed? Even the assistant professor smiled at the honest mistake. :P

So, the professor asked again, with a raised voice this time, "What is the picture of a normal thyroid??!" Dengan bijaknya, kitorang jawab lah, "The prostate consists of a capsule and parenchyma. And the parenchyma has acinis which are separated by a connective tissue stroma." Heh.

"Excellent! Wake up! Don't sleep in the morning!" Aku cuma mampu tergelak. Terlepas minum kopi kot prof aku pagi ni. Hahaha.

Curtain falls

Wow. Just wow. I'm amazed, wondering how freakingly busy I was. Handling the debate and public speaking competition for BOOM! is certainly no easy task. I got flamed after the first round of debate, though I accept all the critics with an open heart. :P And I believe, we did great for the finals. Thank you to those who've helped. :)

Furthermore, whilst busy preparing for the final event yesterday, I also had to slip in a few assignments which were due last week. Luckily I've already gotten them completed a few weeks back and all that's left is to prepare myself for the presentation. I simply can't imagine what would have happened if I were to leave it all till the last minute. >.< Plus, not enough with the hecticness of BOOM! and assignments, I also had my Microbiology practical exam on the day before yesterday. Alhamdulillah, nasib baik senang. Now kena prepare untuk midterms plk next week. -.-

So, a little bit about BOOM!. First of all, it stands for "Blooming Out of Mediocrity", bringing the theme, Nurturing Outstanding Muslim Doctors. It was first planned to be an activity of the AcademicTeam but because of the huge number of participants (168) and the huge budget required, it became an official program of our Alexandrian Malaysian Students' Association. The program was spread out for two whole weeks, with the closing ceremony held yesterday. Though there were many flaws in the management and programming of this program, I believe we managed to complete our target objective which is to nurture and encourage the 1st and 2nd years to stand up and lead. Kudos to everyone.

Being busy, pacing here and there every now and then, I didn't manage to get someone to take some pictures of me. But I believe the photographer of the event took some, so I guess you guys will just have to wait. ;)

Till then, cheerio!

A friend's promo

A friend of mine is sort of playing this browser-based game where you only have to "choose, decide and click" and he wants me to help him get more members to his "side" by promoting him in my blog. So if you're someone who enjoys any kind of browser-based games, why not give it a try? I did join in but lol, too busy to keep up. So here's the link for anyone interested.

Recommended for all ages, I think. :P

Thyroid gland examination

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Us third years are now in our Endocrinology block. So, for our Professional Skills section this week, we had the chance to learn a "little" on how to examine the thyroid gland.

For us clinicians, there are four methods of examination.

First is "Inspection" where we only look at the gland for any abnormalities in size and shape. Some patients may have a very large goiter but some may only have a slight enlargement. We also ask the patient to swallow because the thyroid, being enclosed completely by the pre-tracheal fascia, moves up with degluttition.

The second step is "Palpitation". The best way to palpate the thyroid gland is from behind the patient, whose head is semi-flexed so that his/her neck muscles are relaxed. This is because to palpate the thyroid, we have to insinuate our fingers under these muscles.

The next step is "Percussion". This is used to examine whether the patient has a retro-sternal protrusion of the thyroid. I'm not exactly sure to as how it is done but what I do know is it involves something about the resonance of sound. Pening pening. >.<

Lastly, "Auscultation". By using a stethoscope, we auscultate the thyroid gland for any bruits. Bruits are actually whoosh-like sounds which we can find if the gland is hypervascularized.

So during yesterday's section, the girls went up first to inspect the four LADY patients that came. One has a normal thyroid, one has a slight thyroid enlargement, another has a multinodular goiter and the last one has a very large goiter. During my observation, I noticed that very few of the girls communicated with the patient. Some simply went up and palpated the patients' gland and asked them to swallow. The patient with the multinodular goiter was especially irritated by this. Oh well, these few girls could be having some jitters since its not easy for us to examine patients.

However, most of the other girls did greet and smiled at the patients. It was a bonus for me to see how other people did it and learn from them. Thus, when my turn came, I did what the other girls have done. I simply greeted the patient and asked them, "May I?". And after I examined every patient, a "Syukran awiy" followed and the patient will look up at me, smiled and reply. It simply shows how far a soft approach and a kind voice can help clinicians during examining our patient. All of us, boys AND girls learned a lot from the section.

To be honest though, I did hesitate a little bit when it comes to holding the patients' hands to feel the temperature and condition of their skin. Haha. Sorang patient tu nampak segan bila aku nak pegang tangan dia, aku pun segan lah gak kan. Tersenyum je lah. :P

Ps. Mane elaun aku??!!! >.<

April 6, 2009

Broke.

It's already the 6th day of the month.

Guess what?

MARA tak masukkan lagi duit elaun aku. Huhu.

Not that I'm really broke cause I do have savings, but knowing it was the first time I received my "study" allowance late, did made me feel uneasy.

Elaun aku kena beku ke? Ish, result sem lepas diorang dah dapat, ape lagi Pn Zafirah kita nak?

Kantoi. Diorang taknak bagi dah elaun aku since diorang tau aku nak shopping sakan balik Malaysia summer nanti. :P

I'll go to the bank again next week, and kalau tak masuk gak, aku serbu rumah Sopai(AJK Kebajikan). Grr.

April 5, 2009

Overjoyed.

Do you guys remember the entries I posted after each individual paper I had for my finals a month back? Remember the predictions I made? Well, I suck at making predictions. :P

The first surprise for us - the results came out waaayyy too early if compared to the previous ones. It used to be at least two months after the exams before we could even get a rumor that its coming out. And after the rumors, it'll be like two more weeks before they actually release the results. Biaselah, arab dengan bokra dan biiznillah mereka, takleh nak dipisahkan. Haha. But when I thought things were not as great with the administration as they used to be, they did this. Releasing our results just barely a month after our finals. And I even heard that the slight delay was because the administrators were trying to meet with every department to try and help those who had 59s and get them to 60 so as they will not have to resit for the paper. I'm surprised, really.

Oh come on Joe, tell them your results already. :P

Alhamdulillah, to my amazement (honestly I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them) I improved from 1 A, 3 A- and a mixture of Bs last year. I scored 3 As, 4 A-, and 3 B+. I am thankful for His rezeki and guidance. That'll bump my CGPA up a lil bit. ;)

Anyway, that is that for last semester. I've always been one who does not get carried away with results and achievements. The only thing that is to be brought forward throughtout the year is perserverance.

This semester is a whole new chapter. What we get for last semester won't get us through this semester. There's no such things as, "Alah, kau dah score 7A sem lepas, mesti gempak gak lah sem ni" or "Ish, aku fail lagi lah sem ni since sem satu pun takleh lepas". There is only hardwork and apa nama?* Hehe.

Failures are but only a delayed success, and success is nothing but only a stepping stone for the future. So to my friends and colleagues, jom lah kite same2 habiskan 3rd year ni. We started this journey together, and even though our struggles are different, lets finish this the way we started. :)

*apa nama was Tun M's favourite line when he forgets things. :P

A changing era.

I want to believe, that, with Najib as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia, we will see some serious changes back home. I do believe, that, being the son of our 2nd PM, he would have tailed the footsteps of his late father and that he is smart enough to not follow the one left by his predecessor. Reading his maiden speech as PM, he's already showed something which has been lacking during Pak Lah's reign for quite some time now if I may say - which is the act of showing he does care for what the people think. I sincerely hope, his first act is the first of many.

And things couldn't have been better for BN or UMNO specifically with Tun Mahathir rejoining the party, a definite boost for their manifesto in the coming tri-election. Some may have waited long for Pak Lah to step down and BN could win based only on the benefit of the doubt of the people to Najib, just like what Pak Lah had during BN's huge win in the general elections 5 years back. Nonetheless, some may still have their eye on Khairy, mine including. We'll just see what Najib has planned for KJ. I do hope it is nothing good. :P

Oh anyway, my results should be coming out some time next week. Scaryyy~ xD
